The Portland Institute, NJUPT is a joint partnership of Portland State University in Oregon, USA and the Nanjing University of Posts andTelecommunications in Nanjing, China. Established in 2019, the Institute offers programs in Electrical and Computer Engineering atundergraduate and graduate levels and has a current enrolment of over 1,000 students. The Institute draws on the expertise of faculty fromPSU and NJUPT to jointly design high quality international degree programs. Portland Institute Nanjing is located in the northeast university district of Nanjing. One of China’s five ancientcapitals, Nanjing blends a rich history with today’s vibrant modern city. It is home to several prestigious universities and has athriving academic community. The city is well connected by air and railway, with Shanghai an hour's train ride away.

Aboutthe position

The Portland Institute Nanjing is seeking Academic English instructors to teach the following courses in the2025-2026 academic year:

  • Public Speaking
  • Critical Thinking
  • Science and Society
  • Composition I
  • Summer Academic Communication program

These courses are taught to first- and second-year undergraduates at the Xianlincampus in Nanjing. Each course is 48 contact hours, with sections scheduled as three contact hours per week for 16 weeks. Maximum courseload is 20 contact hours per week.

Instructors are expected to use appropriate teaching strategies, including technologies, and beable to evaluate student learning and modify methods to meet course outcomes. Instructors are also expected to hold weekly office hours andto participate in regular faculty meetings with colleagues in China and Portland. Instructors will travel to China at the beginning ofAugust in preparation for a semester start date of September 1, 2025.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master‚Äôs degree in TESOL or related field
  • 2 years experience of teaching English
  • For undergraduate courses:Experience teaching public speaking, EAP writing, first-year composition, and/or technical writing for university students.
  • Forgraduate courses: Experience teaching graduate communication, including presentation, reading, and writing skills

Preferred Qualifications

  • PhD or EdD 
  • TESOL certification 
  • Knowledge ofMandarin
  • Background in electrical or computer engineering, information technology, signal processing, or computer science

Compensationpackage

Annual salary: 200,000 RMB - 300,000 RMB dependent upon professional and academic qualifications and relevant workexperience. Payment above the maximum range will be considered for exceptional candidates. 

Return airfares each academic year,housing on the NJUPT campus, and cost of and assistance with the visa application will be provided. 

Contracttype

Full time, one year; the employer of record for successful candidates will be NJUPT. These are not PSU positions and donot constitute PSU employment.
